On July 23, 2024, the 15th Committee of Japanese Universities for the Inter-University Exchange Project (Africa) was held online. Forty faculty members and staff from member universities involved in the project participated.
First, representatives from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) held an information session on the Sakura Science Program, a short-term scholarship scheme for young researchers from abroad. They explained the current situation regarding exchange programs in Africa and the D Course (Annual Mutual Exchange Course), which began accepting applications this year.
Next, we discussed a request for the continuation of the scholarship under the Priority Policy Framework of the Japan Student Services Organization’s (JASSO) Student Exchange support program after the end of the project. This project has built a network of student exchanges between Japanese and African students. However, after the project ends, financial burdens, such as high airfares, become a big challenge, making it difficult to continue student exchanges. Participants basically agreed to request the continuation of the scholarship.
Additionally, the IAfP Secretariat Office reported on a private grant obtained for the operation of the Japan–Africa University Database after the completion of the project. They also requested each university to not only update its data but also help create a database for partner universities.
Finally, the Secretariat Office asked all member universities to participate in the joint final symposium in February 2025. It was proposed that each university present their good practices in this project and discuss proposals to promote student exchange with Africa for TICAD 9.
