On 1 February 2022, “AY2021 IAfP Short-term online exchange programs – Addis Ababa University – / AY2021 Online lecture series on lifelong sciences” began. This program is conducted by the following projects and organizations: the education and research program “Innovative Africa: Educational Networking Programs for Human Resource Development in Africa’s SDGs” implemented by Addis Ababa University and Kyoto University, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas 2020AY-2024AY “Lifelong sciences: Reconceptualization of development and aging in the super aging society,” SATREPS-MNGD project, and the Center for African Area Study. This program is aimed at Japanese students who are interested in research on Africa. In addition to a total of four lectures on fieldwork, two workshops, and a round-table talk are scheduled. Seven students from Kyoto University and three students from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies are participating in the lectures.
In the first lecture, Associate Professor Morie Kaneko (Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies) gave an overview of the program. Thereafter, the students introduced themselves based on their research interests following which, Dr. Aynalem Megersa (Center for Gender Studies, Addis Ababa University) gave a lecture on “Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches in Fieldwork,” referring to her own research as a case study. In the latter half of her lecture, she also gave advice on cautionary points and the readiness of mind for fieldwork. During the question and answer session, participants made inquiries based on their own research experiences and interests, and there was a lively exchange of ideas.
